Hat Display

So, I'm probably going to be selling these beanies at farmer's markets, and other craft shows, so I wanted a nice, cheap way to display the hats. After searching online, I didn't really find much, and so I came up with something on my own:

Supplies needed:
1/2 inch diameter wood sticks, about 12" long (I got a pack of 6 at joanns for $1)
2x4 about 1.5 feet long (or similar item for base)
4" styrofoam balls ($4.50 for 2) [NOTE: I used 4" balls because I make newborn sized hats. 4" will look nice up to about 6 months old. After that get a 5" ball, for adults get a 6" ball]
glue
drill
Cloth if you want to cover the styrofoam ball

Steps:
1. drill holds in the styrofoam ball to fit the sticks. Also drill a hole in your wood stand.
Step 2: put glue in the hole and around the stick. Let sit overnight.

Step 3: Cover with cloth
(I chose not to do this step right now, I'll probably do it later!)

Done!

Now you can just put the sticks in the holes you drilled in the wood stand and put your hats on the balls.

Lesson in Diagonals

So, I have a lot of projects in the works right now, one of which involves using a diagonal edge (or triangle shape). I understood the concept, decrease at the beginning and end of each row, but it just didn't look right at all:
The edges are very bumpy and not a nice clean diagonal.

So I went to work, reinventing the diagonal.

I searched online and could not find a tutorial of any kind on how to make a diagonal in double crochet. I found one in single crochet, but let's face it, single crochet takes too long!
I then discovered a simple trick to make a nice clean straight diagonal line working in rows:

Here is the BIG secret:
At the beginning of the row, you ch 1 (instead of 2). Then you double crochet across the entire row, except the last two, which you do a double crochet decrease.

That's all there is to it! and you just repeat that and it gives you a NICE looking diagonal!

Crochet Scalloped Beanie, In colors

Now I've added a splash of color to my previous design. Yes, I designed this entire beanie myself! Soon I will be offering them for sale (as soon as I buy more yarn of pretty colors!)

Scalloped Beanie - Free Crochet Pattern

I saw a picture of a beanie just like this and I fell in love! I searched and I could not find a pattern for it anywhere, free or for sale. So, I had to make it up, and it turned out great!

Pattern Updated 1/4/13: fixed a lot of typos. I have heard from people the pattern runs small. Will be checking sizing in the next update.
