Handmade Especially For You Charity

I am proud to announce that I am now working with "Handmade With Love Especially For You" (HandmadeEspecially.org), a charity that donates handmade comfort scarves to abused women who enter women's shelters in my Southern California area.
I'm going to post FREE charity scarf patterns that satisfy the size requirements, as well as make a list of other free patterns available that satisfy the charity's size requirement. If you enjoy any of my free scarf patterns please make an extra one and donate it as a token of appreciation for the free pattern. Donations can be sent to the organization's central location (Address can be found on their site (HandmadeEspecially.org).

Requirements:
4-5 inches wide and at least 60" long
Large crochet hooks (J,K,N,P)
Bright happy colors
SOFT yarn (these are for COMFORT, so no SuperSaver yarn please. I personally use Caron's Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft brands, but other brands are fine as long as they are SOFT)
Personalized touches such as ribbon, frills, etc, are welcome!

IN ADDITION, 100% of all donations made to this blog through the PDF pattern document will be donated directly to making comfort scarves. Each donation pays for ONE scarf!

I have also compiled a list of other crochet patterns that fit the size requirements on my pinterest board and here:

  1. Thanks for your notes about Handmade. I hope your readers will want to participate. We always need more volunteer scarfers. My motto is: There is always too much abuse and too few comfort scarves. Let's see what we can do to rectify this situation.

  2. Here's a brief version of Handmade's most recent Newsletter. It tells a lot about the positive impact of our scarf project for abused women. You can find a more complete version on our website: www.handmadeespecially.org

 Thanks to all our kit makers, knitters, crocheters, winders, and wrappers we were able to distribute just under 1,000 comfort scarves in March. We plan to ship at least the same number in time for Mother’s Day parties at our 57 shelters for abused women. Wow!

Shipping is our biggest (and just about our only) expense. When you donate $$$, almost all your money goes to defraying the cost of shipping kits to volunteers or shipping finished scarves to shelters.

The following excerpts are typical of what directors say about the value of our comfort scarves at their shelters.

Caroline Reyna, Program Manager at Family Assistance Program in Victorville, writes: Thank you and your organization for the beautiful handmade scarves. Our agency works with women who have been in human trafficking and slave trade situations. These women are now in shelter trying to get their lives together. We gave them the scarves that your lovely organization made for us. The ladies were so grateful and admired the beauty in them. . . We hope for your continued support.

Teresa Trinidad, Program Manager at Haven House in Pasadena, explains: Thank you and everyone associated with Handmade Especially for You for your generous donation of 25 handmade scarves. Your commitment to helping victims of domestic violence and their children is sincerely appreciated.

Kathy Strong, Director of Contracts at WTLC in Fullerton, writes: Your generous donation (of 20 comfort scarves) touched the hearts of all of us in the organization and has a huge impact on our ability to help victims of domestic violence/human trafficking and their children. You have helped us save lives and thank you for that.

Yes, the comments are similar, but I never get tired of reading them. Each month, I am so glad to know that our comfort scarves are doing their job. I am sorry only that there is such an endless line of women and children who need them and that it costs so much to get the scarves to the shelters.

As you must realize, Handmade wouldn’t be able to make comfort scarves if we didn’t have yarn. Happily, we have received lots of yarn donations in March and April. Major yarn companies, including Berroco, Brown Sheep, Crystal Palace, Feza Yarns, Mountain Colors, Trendsetter Yarns, and Universal Yarn, made very generous donations.

However impressed you are by the long list of donors, don’t ever think we don’t need more yarn. We need a constant supply and we never have enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our yarn donors. You make comfort scarves a reality.

Finally, Mother’s Day is just around the corner, on May 12. We want to deliver a huge number of scarves for this special occasion. So we need a big push to get enough scarves for Mother’s Day. We may even need to have two shipping days. If we don’t have enough by April 26, we’ll send more early in May.

Every time I look back at where Handmade started in October, 2008 and see how far we’ve come, I’m floored. I know we couldn’t have achieved all this without all of you scarfers, yarn donors, cash donors, everyone. Your dedication and support are phenomenal. Thank you so much.
